 About Me

Yao Xiao (Monika),
- Marketing Strategist
- Storyteller in Journalism
- Digital Media Creator
- Videographer
- Editor

A storyteller who loves turning ideas into something people can feel, remember, and share.

I combine the curiosity and storytelling of journalism with the strategy and audience insight of marketing communication. This blend has helped me bring to life health campaigns backed by global foundations, secure millions in support for campus projects, and create content that inspires people to click, share, and act.

I thrive where creativity meets purpose. Whether it is building a new sustainability program, dreaming up an event that fills the room, or crafting content that sparks conversations, my work is about connection. I focus on making sure people care about the right story at the right time.

Outside work, you will find me café-hopping, taking far too many photos, or searching for the perfect playlist to match the mood of my next big idea.

Project Showcase

Data + Visualization x Code = Storytelling in Digital Era

Using Python and R to Create Data Visualization and Tell meaningful Stories with coding

This website is for today’s journalism, marketing, and media students. We want to walk you into the world of data in a super approachable way. Our core vibe is "telling stories with code". So even if you don’t have a tech background, you can still nail data visualization and basic analysis easily.

From real-life Python and R examples to visualization case studies and tool guides, every step is here to help you spot trends, get what the numbers mean, and turn your insights into clear, convincing stuff you can share.

This isn’t just a place to learn tech skills. It’s a gentle eye-opener. We’ll teach you to make those quiet numbers "talk" and take your stories and insights out to the wider world.

Data Solution Journalism Story

Topic: How Boston Undergraduate Students Struggle to Find Off-Campus Housing

I researched and interviewed students to create a feature story on the housing challenges faced by undergraduates in Boston. Through surveys and direct conversations, I gathered real cases and rental data, shaping them into a clear and engaging narrative. Using HTML and CSS, I built a well-structured webpage that combined text, visuals, and multimedia. I visualized market trends with interactive maps and charts in Flourish, turning complex data into accessible stories. The project was published on GitHub Pages for public access.

Ariadne Labs: Home Hospital Video

Topic: Hospital-Level Care, Wherever You Are

The video content is about Home Hospital Director David Levine, MD, MPH, MA, discussing how Ariadne Labs is expanding the possibilities of hospital-level care outside of brick-and-mortar hospitals.

I began by gathering a range of materials from interviews, B-roll footage, and stakeholder visuals, carefully reviewing each piece to ensure the story was clear and engaging. In Adobe Premiere Pro, I shaped the narrative flow with precise pacing, smooth transitions, and balanced audio-visual integration. I refined every cut, color grade, and sound cue to create a cohesive and polished final video that draws the viewer in.

Newsletter of Ariadne Labs

Weekly Newsletters

I managed the end-to-end production of weekly newsletters for an audience of over 10,000 subscribers, using Campaign Monitor for distribution and Canva for visual design. Each edition was carefully planned, written, and formatted to maintain brand consistency while keeping the content fresh and engaging. By combining strong visual storytelling with clear calls to action, I helped grow the subscriber base by more than 5% within six months and strengthened audience connection with ongoing projects and initiatives.
